In the Grave papers (bought by Rev. Graves, Kilkenny from John O’Donovan’s widow) Royal Irish Academy Dr. John O’Donovan in the 1840s was trying to trace the O’Donovan and their various branches.  He was intrigued as to when the Wexford Branch left West Cork.

Glascott family History

http://www.ocotilloroad.com/geneal/glascott1.html

nne Beata (Glascott) O’Donnavan

Birth: 19 May 1832, at 17 Leeson Street, Dublin, county Dublin, Ireland

Father: John Glascott

Mother: Mary (Donovan) Glascott

Married: William John (Donovan) O’Donnavan on 10 October 1872, in New Ross district, county Wexford, Ireland

William was Anne’s first cousin. He was born on 9 June 1832, the son of William Donovan and Elizabeth Dallas. William Donovan, of Tomnalosset, was the son of Richard Donovan and Anne Richards, and the brother of Anne’s mother, Mary (Donovan) Glascott. William was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, graduating B.A. in 1855, LL.B in 1859 (both in the name William John Donovan) and LL.D. in 1860 in the name William John O’Donnavan. He was a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, elected on 8 May 1865 (Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy vol 9 p224)and the Royal Dublin Society, elected in 1874 (Kerry cattle herd book p48). William’s name change from his father’s Donovan was deliberate, and presumably occurred between 1859, when William was awarded the degree of LL.B. in the name of Donovan and 1860 when he graduated LL.D. in the name O’Donnavan.

The Topographical Poems of John O’Dubhagain and Giolla-na-naomh O’Huidhrin p40 (A. Thom, 1862):

Morgan William O’Donovan, Esq., of Montpelier, in the county of Cork, has not only re-assumed the O’, which his ancestors had rejected for many generations, but has styled himself “the O’Donovan,” chief of his name, being the next of kin to the last acknowledged head of that family, the late General Richard O’Donovan, of Bawnlahan, whose family became extinct in the year 1841. His example in resuming the O’ has been followed by Timothy O’Donovan, Esq., of O’Donovan’s Cove, in the county of Cork, head of a very ancient sept of the same family, and by William John O’Donnavan, a junior member of the Wexford Clan-Donovan.

1845-1847. Members Ballineen, West Cork,  Agricultural Society from Minute Book.

It was based on the record lent to him by William Daunt of Deriga House, Ballineen.  His uncle Mr. Daunt was secretary of the Society and presumable maintained the records including the townland of the member.

Landlords have enjoyed a bad press in Ireland,.  However n West Cork, some and their agent were anxious to promote modern agriculture, new crops, selective breeding, instructors.  The various Agricultural Societies normally have a large Landlord representation.

Manch

Conner, possibly not a member but gave speeches.  The Conners/Connor/O’Connors were agents for the Devonshire Estate but dismissed for alleged malpractice in granting favourable leases to relations.  The family may be a scion of the ancient irish O’Conor family or London merchants Conner.  Over the years individuals were involved in civil affairs some loyalist some nationalist. 1847, Irish Speaking Among Protestants in the Bandon Valley.

It might be noted that later in the century most people in West Cork still continued to speak Irish but through the medium of the English language.

Roaringwater Journal

I had been aware of George Victor Du Noyer’s antiquarian drawings from my days as a student, but that did not prepare me for the Du Noyer exhibition currently running at the Crawford – it’s nothing short of breathtaking. Du Noyer, it turns out, was far far more than an antiquarian: he was a nineteenth century Renaissance man, artistic, talented, curious, scientific and learned in equal proportions. Stones, Slabs and Seascapes is curated by Peter Murray (recently retired director of the Crawford) and co-curated by Petra Coffey of the Geological Survey.  If you do nothing else this winter, get to Cork to see this exhibition!

I’ve decided to annotate the images with quotes in italics (image follows quote) from the outstanding exhibition catalogue which is a collection of essays, each written from a slightly different perspective. I’ve tried to show representative samples of Du Noyer’s work, mostly from the exhibition…

The Rev. Dives Downes, C of I Bishop of Cork. in his visitation 1700 makes no reference to Swantons. It is likely they arrived some time after 1700.  If William Swanton was taking a lease in 1760 he was probably at least 40 years old suggesting the family wee in Ballydehob around 1702.  Th jury is out on the origin of the family, a Minister in the 1799 referred to their Scots ancestry, most accounts suggest Norfolk.

The 1760s lease from Lord Riversdale one of the extended Hull/Tonson family aligned to the Boyles/Lord Shannon/Burlington Estate.  Parts of the Burlington Estate in the 1730s in the area were sold off due to pressure from their London Mortgagees.   The Durrus Evansons were one such purchser.

The Swantons exhibit a strong sense business acumen and entrepreneurial flair. This is evident also in Catholic branches and in descendants who have a Swanton ancestor to this day.
