995 1 Oct. 1842 Lease made between Richard, 1st Earl of Bantry, Glengarriffe and Lord Viscount Berehaven, Bantry House, and John [Jagoe], (Barrister-at-Law), City of Dublin. It is for a house and building ground on the Mill Quay in Bantry town (see attached map), for a term of 200 years from the 25th March, at a yearly rent of £4. 4. 0, payable half yearly on the 25th March and the 29th September. Includes a coloured map drawn on the left margin, no scale given.It shows the leased premises, the adjoining holdings and its position relative to the river, the mill and Main Street; and a draft copy of this lease. Possibly site of Maratime Hotel

John Jagoe and his wife on the UK census, living in London he also died in London, John Jagoe died on Oct. 20th 1851 in Westminster Hospital, London. He is down as 54 years old. Witness Samuel Jagoe, living in 12, Danvers St, Chelsea. Probably John’s son, Samuel, born c 1832, emigrated to Australia in 1852.

1714 Lease of Part Of Lands in West Carbery from Henry Boyle to Darby Mahoney Excepting Mineral Rights Probably including Townlands at Ardgoena and Drumreagh Later Part of Evanson Durrus Estate.

This listing is probably in connection with litigation with the Evanson in the 1850s over mineral rights of Dromreagh and Ardgouena.

It was fairly common for the former owners of estates to appear as tenants or middle men in the 18th century. It is possible that Darby Mahoney is of the same O’Mahony line the original owners who mortgaged the lands to Boyle in the early 17th century.

The land was originally sold by the Duke’s predecessor in title, Edward Boyle and his wife Mary by way of lease for 500 years from the 21st May 1626. The property including 3 ploughlands at Drumreagh, Dromelower and Ardgenane in Durrus including Murreagh was acquired by the Earl of Burlington and Cork and Sir William Heathcote who disposed of it to Richard Tonson in 1738 included as part of the Manorial rights to the Lord of the Manor of Ballydehob including the Durrus lands. In 1765 the Durrus lands were demised to Richard Tonson Evanson and renewed by Lord Baron Riversdale to Nathaniel Evanson in 1811,

Good turbary sea manure and a sand quay sea bathing in perfection within 3 mins walk from house. Also to be let a large corn (Noted Store on Dunmanus Bay opposite Durrus Pier) store and kiln and a good corn growing country at the head of Dunmanus Bay. 1731.  Purchase by Colonel Tonson of Lisacaha, Schull, West Cork from Burlington Estate (Successors to Boyle, Great Earl of Cork) Reserving Manor Court of Ballydehob).

It is likely that Boyle acquired most of the Mizen Peninsula from the O’Mahonys and O’Driscolls by mortgage default.  He was often criticised for his legal chicanery and his actions contributed to the general uprising in West Cork in 1641.

The Tonsons purchases were litigated in the 1850s as to whether the mineral right were included or not.  At that stage the area had promising mineral deposits.

The Tonsons are likely Hulls of Lemcon Castle Schull name changed to inherit property.

In the late 17th early 18th century the Devonshire/Boyle/Burlington Estate was jointly managed by Jeremiah/Jeremy Coughlan, from Carrigmanus a Protestant Attorney and Seneschal of Dungarvan and Andrew Crotty a Catholic. Coughlan’s  married a sister of Nathaniel Evanson of Durrus and they jointly rented ploughlands at Durrus from The Bernards (later Earls of Bandon).
