Extract from letter ‘Very Bad Mutton and Beef, you Can’t Conceive of the Wretchedness of it’, of Godwin Swift (Customs Man), 16th May 1757 from Crookhaven, West Cork, Ireland.

‘Now with regard to the place and provisions: you are to know that you see nothing here but mountains of rock (not cliffs) and yet those rocks are more dear to poor people or strangers as the lands within 2 miles of Dublin.  There is here undoubtedly great plenty of fish, yet the people are so lazy they’d rather live on salt mackerel and potatoes then give themselves the trouble to take fresh fish.  There is no garden stuff here, very bad mutton and lamb, and no beef, not a tree or even a shrub within 8 miles of the place….

30th June 1757  ‘…nothing but rocky mountains around us for 20 miles, where not even a slide car can go the road, nor any other cattle than little horses bred and used to this country….you can’t conceive the wretchedness of it.  We have neither bread to eat nor malt liquor wine or cider to drink, nor meat except a little mutton and bad lamb.  Our liquor a bad toddy, our victuals potatoes and fish and lie in a cottage..

By the mid 19th century a large number of Irish landed Estates were hopelessly insolvent. This was caused by a combination of the effects of the Familne falling agricultural prices since the Battle of Waterloo and the availability of easy credit. Many Irish landed estates borrowed heavily to fund children’s education, dowries for daughters jointures for unmarried female children as well as supporting an unsustainable lifestyle.

The solution was the Landed Estates courts which took over the Estates guaranteed title to prospective purchases who took title without the mortgages.

Many of the records of the sales which include legal tenure, tenant details and surveys are available in the National Archives. Better quality reproductions may be obtained there by individually printing from the micro films.

This is part of the Congested District Board and Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction effort to improve agriculture.   Many of the same families appear from the 1850s winning prizes in agricultural shows and some of their present day descendants are still involved.

1821. Partial Listing of Tenants in Kilmoe (Goleen), West Cork.

Thank to the original poster of this information.

Surnames: Johnson, Ferguson, Allen, King, Daly, Donovan, Williamson, Kelly, Supple, Coughlan, Mahony, Kingston, Past, Neagle, Coghlan, Cunningham, Driscoll, Sullivan, White, McCarthy, Neville, Boyde, Nicholson, King, Burns, Fleming.

PARISH OF KILMOE: This parish is at the extremity of the peninsula between Dunmanus Bay and Roaring Water Bay in SW Cork. In 1821, it would have been a very remote part of Ireland. Yet, a little, 30-page, loosely-stitched tithe book/ledger has managed to survive and bears the date 1821 on its cover. This book is not to be confused with the official tithe applotment book for Kilmoe Parish which was drawn up in the year 1828, some seven years later.

This 1821 notebook’s appearance is somewhat reminiscent of the tenure, house and field books of Griffith’s Valuation. There are a total number of 516 names, some repeats.

Unlike the Tithe Defaulters Lists which record in excess of 29,000 names, these lists do not have actual addresses. It is not clearly stated that the farmers listed for each townland actually lived in that townland. (This is not the case in the Tithe Defaulters Lists where the name of the abode is clearly stated, thus one knows where there is repetition.) However, is may be not unreasonable to assume that most or all of these farmers did live in the townlands listed; possibly you can check this information against the official tithe applotment book for Kilmoe Parish for 1828.

Per “Irish Roots,” this is part of the OPMA (Official Papers Miscellaneous Assorted) files in the National Archives, Bishop Street, Dublin. (Call Number: OPMA 162/1).

In many cases the names of the townlands in 1821 have changed; more importantly, there are fewer townlands in the parish now than there were in 1821. (See below).

The Crowleys of West Cork

Crowley,_by_Nicholas_Joseph_Crowley.jpg

The sept of O’Crowley began as an offshoot of the MacDermots of Moylurg (Co Roscommon). Their ancestor was one O’Cruadhlaoich from which the name Crowley derives. It means Hard Hero! This branch settled near Dunmanway (Co Cork) and had a recognized chief living at Kilshallow. Many were professional soldiers. The O’Crowleys usually fought with the Mac Cartys. A large portion of the O’Crowley lands were forfeited to Richard Boyle, the First Earl Of Cork.

The name is so connected with Co Cork that 75% of Crowley and O’Crowley births are registered in that county.

In form, Crowley is English, a habitation name from an Old English term meaning “wood of the crows”, and no doubt some of those in Ireland bearing the name derive from English stock. However, the vast majority are of Gaelic Irish extraction, with Crowley an anglicisation of Ó Cruadhlaoich, from “cruadh” and “laoch”, meaning “hardy” and “warrior”. The Cruadhlaoch, from whom the family takes…
