While researching for this post I picked up the excellent book by Niall Mac Coitir, Ireland’s Birds – Myths, Legends and Folklore and got diverted by a section on Eagles: why wouldn’t I, as we live up here in Nead an Iolair, Eagle’s Nest? I was delighted to discover from this book that Adam and Eve are reincarnated as Eagles and live on the island of Inishbofin, at the mouth of Killary Harbour in Galway. This adds to the list of important people of the world who have ended up in Ireland, including St Valentine in Dublin and Santa Claus (St Nicholas) who rests in Jerpoint Abbey. I’m hoping to discover many more…

My real subject today is the Curlew: we have seen a few of them lately below us in Rossbrin Cove. They are winter visitors from Scandinavia. There is a small breeding population in Ireland, mainly centred in Galway…

Transportation to Botany Bay, Australia of Doctor O’Connor and Alexander McCarthy, Barrister, Both Bantry, West Cork, after Abortive United Irishmen Rising, Ireland, 1798. Plea for Clemency Arthur Hutchins, Ardnagashel, Bantry.

This is an incidental to Paddy O’Keeffe (Bantry, Businessman and Antiquarian) researches into Blair family of Durrus.  McCarthy may be an attorney does not appear in Kings Inns records for Bantry.

 

Bryan O’Connor went out to Norfolk Island as assistant to the surgeon William Redfern. O’Connor ended up in gaol in 1802. letters from him and his brother in law, William Alcock to Governor King in Australian Archives .  From a relation: ” “The Limrick family. My great great grandmother (Mark O’Connor, Australia) was Ann Limrick Starkey (Starkie) born in Rosscarbery to Wm Starkie and Anna Maria Alcock, (her father was the nephew of Henry Alcock of Wilton in Co. Wexford. Her father was William Henry Loftus Alcock, transported with his brother in law Dr Bryan O’Connor of Bantry to Australia for being United Irisman and William for visiting Dr Bryan O’Connor in Goal ” “Dr Bryan O’Connor did in fact return to Ireland after receiving a full pardon in 1809, his brother in law, William Henry Loftus Alcock, never did return to Ireland from Australia. Dr O’Connor had a medical practice in Clonakilty, where he lived with his wife Jane until he passed away. “

Dr. O’Connor had three brothers at the time officers in the British Army.

After some years Dr. O’Connor, was allowed to return home and became a GP in Clonakilty, a respected member of the local community.

Robert Swanton, (1764-1840) Ballydehob, West Cork, member United Irishmen Directory arrest, imprisonment escape to New York where he was active in US Politics and became Judge of Maritime Court.

Callnans Clonakilty:

Callnan family hereditary Physicians to the McCarthy Riabhachs, 1798 in West Cork, Dr. John Richard Elmore owner of largest Linen Mill in Munster in Clonakilty 1820s and Dr. William and Albert Callnan, Clonakilty.

The Blairs may have originated in Armagh, they were in Dunmanway at the end of the 17th century and were associated with the Whites of Bantry.   White married Miss Hamilton from Armagh, early 18th century.  From Bantry they moved to what is now Durrus c 1780s.  The Estate was bought some time earlier c 1,000 acres.  The name Tonson occurs with the children, may be associated with the Riversdale/Hull family who may have sold the Blairs the land or marriage.

The late 18th century and early 19th century was a boom period for Irish agriculture caused by the Napoleonic wars. After the end of the wars a deep depression descended made worse in areas such as West Cork by the collapse of the home weaving sector.  Emigration commenced in late 1820s of Protestant families and gathered pace in the later decades.  These families were small to middling tenant farmers with a sprinkling of labourers and carpenters, masons, blacksmiths, etc.  The area looked at is the triangle bounded by Skibbereen, Bantry, and Crookhaven.  Among the families (Catholic) from this area and period were those of the singer Bing Crosby.

At the time Rochester, New York was enjoying a boom due to the opening of the Erie Canal linking the Atlantic to the Great Lakes.  In politics…
