The Dairyman, a Vanished 18th and 19th century Occupation, now may make a type of comeback with the ending of Milk Quotas, 1741 reference on Kenmare Estate, Dairy Agreement 1897.

There are references from the early 18th century to Dairymen. This was where a family rented a herd of cows from either a Landlord or a large tenant. The ‘rent’ would usually be high but a good dairyman with his family could make good money. The agreement below sets out the terms which were probably standard for a sizeable letting, done in an attorney’s office. The coming of the Land Acts in the early 20th century effectively finished this line of work.

The ending of milk quotas is again opening up new forms of farm organisation.

the Sullivan (Ceohanach/Johnny Owens)family for example originated in the Cousane/Kealkil area and over a number of generations were variously in Molivard, Derrysullivan, Dromreagh, Mulloch…

James Hennessy, Irish Merchant, Ostend 1699-1758

There is a fascinating description of the career of James Hennessy and the extended network of Irish merchant emigres in Ostend in a book

By David Dickson, Jan Parmentier, Jane H. Ohlmeyer

Charles Hennessy was born to a well connected family in the Blackwater valley, Co Cork in 1699.  The family was connected to the Nagles and other old English families whose fortunes had changed with the new political situation at the end of the 17th century.  The statesman Edmond Burke was from the same milieu.

Charles emigrated to Ostend in 1730 and was helped by a close network of Irish merchant families involved in the butter, hide and general trading.  There were families with Youghal connections such as the Rays and Lucans and from Cork the Roches, Rays and Coppingers.  These emigre Cork families were from an…

Slate Quarries, Drimoleague, Sea Lodge Durrus, Kilcrohane, West Cork from Skibbereen and West Carbery Eagle or South Western Advertiser 1865/6, and Lead Mine 1310 Belamire, Durrus

durrushistory's avatarWest Cork History

There is a long history of mining in the Durrus/Mizen area. There is a reference c 1310 by Edmund Gould in the British History online papers to a lead mine in Belamire which is probably near Sea Lodge (Townland Gearhameen), Durrus.

The historic Ordnance Survey map c 1830 shows a Lead Mine in the vicinity of Clonee to the south of the present Bog Road from Durrus to Bantry.

This is from the local newspaper later known as ‘The Skibbereen Eagle’ notorious for ‘Keeping an eye on the Czar’ and later incorporated into the ‘Southern Star’.
