The Duke of Devonshire commenced an action in 1854 in the Encumbered Estates Court to confirm that lands to be disposed of by Nathaniel Evanson did not include minerals.
The land was originally sold by the Duke’s predecessor on title, Edward Boyle and his wife Mary by way of lease for 500 years from the 21st May 1626. The property including 3 ploughlands at Drumreagh, Dromelower and Ardgenane in Durrus including Murreagh was acquired by the Earl of Burlington and Cork and Sir William Heathcote who disposed of it to Richard Tonson in 1738 included as part of the Manorial rights to the Lord of the Manor of Ballydehob including the Durrus lands. In 1765 the Durrus lands were demised to Richard Tonson Evanson and renewed by Lord Baron Riversdale to Nathaniel Evanson in 1811,
The Duke succeeded in his claim. The papers are in the National Library, Lismore papers 1854 List Ms43, 964.

For post on Freke- Evans estates
https://durrushistory.wordpress.com/2011/10/09/carberyevansevans-freke-estate-durrus/
Another survey of the Shuldham Estate in Dunmanway in the general area was done in 1801-3 possibly for raising a mortgage on the estate.

A surveyor Thomas Sherrard prepared maps of the estates of Sir John Freke-Evans including Ballycomane in Durrus which map was done in 1788. In the mid 1500s the Ballycomane lands came into the possession of the Coppinger family by way of mortgage from the McCarthys and were still Coppinger lands at the time of the Down Survey 1660s.
The Map divides the townland into
West 210 acres arable and mountain pasture
Middle 266 acres arable and pasture
Lisheen 305 acres arable and mountain
Mountain 318 acres coarse mountain
East 213 acres arable and mountain
The owners of nearby townlands are given
Glenlough, Moulivard and Clonee Hugh Hutchinson.
West Clonee Arthur Hyde (probably of Castlehyde House, Fermoy now house of Michael Flatley).
James Bernard Carrighvoy, Dromtineheen Crutee
Eviction Timothy Harrington 1887s:
Ballycomane was the scene of a notorious eviction by the Trustees of Lord Carbery in the 1880s, this was raised by James Gilhooley the Bantry based MP in the House of Commons, London.

1821 dublin castle chief secretary, bantry estate, jago bantry fishery development, sofala turon river australia
The name of John Jago, Bantry appears on the online index of the Bantry Estate records as acquiring a lease for a store and yard on the Quay in 1830. Some of the Chief Secretary Papers for Dublin Castle held in the National Archives have now been put on line and Mr. Jago also features there.
At one stage he had a shop in Cork in the Barrack Stret/Bandon Road area.
In 1821 he was writing proposing that education be provided free of any particular sect. He was also petitioning for the development of the fishing industry and for his own appointment as a Fishery Inspector in Kerry. Mr Jago was presumably involved in the fishing industry.
His son John qualified as a barrister and entered a lease with the Bantry Estate for the store and yard in 1844. His date of birth is 1804 and his mother is Margaret O’Connor. He may have gone to Australia later.
In the Bantry Estate records Margaret Jagoe, nee Young a widow in involved in a property transaction in 1791 near the present Maritime Hotel a life named is her son John aged 20, giving him a date of birth of 1791, the Young family fishing merchant also feature in the deed. She is probably his mother.

Burial Register St James Church and inscriptions of local graveyards, Durrus
Pre 1880 families would have used Moulivard Burial Grounds and some still do. In the last 50 years burials included a Shannon woman from Moulivard her maiden name was also Shannon from Rossmore so presumably she was buried in her own family plot. Other local graveyards include the old Kilcrohane about 1 mile west of the village used by local Protestant families in the 19th century including the Swantons. Also the old Caheragh graveyard and Keelcangle on the Durrus/Toormore Road used by families on the Mizen side of Durrus:

The first records are Church of Ireland and Methodist. Marriage records for the Church of Ireland from 1845 may be consulted in the Representative Church Library in Dublin those from c 1790 to 1845 were sent to the Public Records Office during the troubles for safekeeping but were lost when that was destroyed. The Catholic Records were started by the Parish Priest Fr. Quin (one of a number of Tipperary Priests incardated to West Cork, Dore to Caheagh, Ryan to Drimoleague and Doheny to Dunmanway) in 1818 and are on irishgenealogy.ie sometimes the townland names are in an obscure format. There are some records in Cork Churches some of which were transcribed by Dr. Richard Caulfield in the 1870s and 1880s, the originals being destroyed. There are quite a number of people listed in the Catholic records with a Protestant background as party to marriage or witness, as is the case of people from a Catholic background in the Protestant records.

Ambrosian Library Milan., Antiphonary, Antiphonary of Bangor, ards peninsula, Bangor, irish mythology, kingdom of heavens, Mount Stewart, Nugent Estate, Portaferry, robert lloyd, Robert Lloyd Praeger, travel, vacation
I visited Mount Stewart, Co. Down recently and the gardens are a fascination. They were laid out by Lady Londonderry from the 1920s and contain interesting motifs such as topiary based on Irish mythology. On her mothers side she was descended from the Earl of Antrim, McDonnnells an old Antrim gallowglass family.
Back down the Ards Peninsula heading for the ferry you pass the Nugent Estate in Portaferry. This is the same family (originally Savage name changed) who came to the area with the Normans. An interesting account of their finances is contained in a recent history of big houses in the North of Ireland (The Big House in the North of Ireland; Olwen Purdue, UCD Press 2009) where Colonel Nugent’s investments from the proceeds of land sales in 1879 are given, US railroads, ‘Portugese’ Bonds gas and mineral companies.
Afterwards I was looking at Robert Lloyd Praeger’s wonderful book, ‘The Way that I went’ 1937, which covers the area in archaeological, historical and botanical terms. I saw that there was a thriving monastery in Bangor for almost 800 years before its destruction by the Vikings. A remnant, the Antiphonary of Bangor, survives in the Ambrosian Library in Milan which came there via the monastery at Bobbio. It its contents include prayers for the abbots who presided at Bangor and it is dated at between 680 and 691 ad.
The contents are in Latin and translate as
(To such a one did Colman succeed,
A man friendly to all;
Now he sitteth on high, to Christ
Singing hymns. The fifteenth (Abbot)
May Cronanus lay hold on life:
May the lord preserve him.
(These they are) whom the Lord shall summon

The Centre for Irish latin American Studies has an interesting article concerning Susanna Beamish-Strachan http://www.irlandeses.org/imsla2011_7_04_10_Conrad_Hicks.htm
She was born outside Dunmanway, Co. Cork to a Church of Ireland family but formed an attachment to the Methodist Church. She left to go to a Bible College in London and met Henry Strachan (1872-1945) a Canadian of Scots decent. They went to Argentina, and over the years travelled as missionaries in South and Central America settling in Costa Rica. They founded a Bible College and the article documents their work.
