People worldwide with Cork connections owe an eternal debt of gratitude to Richard Caulfield. His career is dealt with here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Caulfield

Many of the Church of Ireland records from the Cork Churches were transcribed by him and the originals went up in a few seconds with the detonation of explosives placed by the Anti-Treaty IRA in the Public Records Office of the 4 Courts Complex in 1922. At the time the Public Records Office was regarded as among the best in the world.

The RCB Library in Orwell Road, Dublin have some of his original transcripts, the industry involved is apparent from his comments.

‘Reverend L.O.Madden lent me the Registers on the 30th June 1877, Saturday 1.30 commenced 8.30 (coden sie)’

In the middle of the transcription between different sections from Births to say Deaths he has inserted in his own hand.

This is an index to the transcription of the Greenwich In-Pensioner register  as taken from the ADM 73/58 book at the National Archives, London. This was compiled by Ted Beard. The original book had date of entry, name, age, place of birth, place of residence, marital status, number of children, trade, length of service, last ship and any injuries/medical conditions brought on by service in the Royal Navy. If required these can be given on request to Ted or myself. This was a very hard to read document written in tight spidery scrawl, so transcription errors may (indeed will!) have happened.

By the mid 19th century a large number of Irish landed Estates were hopelessly insolvent. This was caused by a combination of the effects of the Familne falling agricultural prices since the Battle of Waterloo and the availability of easy credit. Many Irish landed estates borrowed heavily to fund children’s education, dowries for daughters jointures for unmarried female children as well as supporting an unsustainable lifestyle.

The solution was the Landed Estates courts which took over the Estates guaranteed title to prospective purchases who took title without the mortgages.

Many of the records of the sales which include legal tenure, tenant details and surveys are available in the National Archives. Better quality reproductions may be obtained there by individually printing from the micro films.

Witnesses:  Robert Lavers. Charles Dalton, John Vickery.

The Swantons referred to probably came from ‘over the hill’ from Gortnagrough, Ballydehob.  The Notters wee originally German Protestants who settled in Crookhaven c 1630.  There were various Vickery families in the vicinity one across the Durrus River in Ballycomane others in neighbouring townlands.  Various Sullivan families were around, intermarried with the Vickeries.  There are a number of references to Roycroft families in the Bantry Estate Rent books for neighbouring townlands.

Enclosed is a will of Roycroft presumably the same family copied pre 1922 destruction.

Deriniau (possibly mis transcribed no name appears elsewhere) is probably a representative of the Congreve or Tonson family as the land eastward was part of the  Bandon Estate at the time rented to the Evanson. to the west the O’Donovan Estate.
