Reading the recollections there is a touch of the Seanachaí telling stories around the fire on a winners night.  Like many Irish and other Revolutionaries he came from a comfortable background until disaster struck the family.  His grandfather family were linen bleachers as well as having a substantial farm with servant boys and girls and milking 20 cows.  In many part so West Cork into the 1960s a man with 20 cows would be regards as a strong farmer

1924 Peadar O h Anrachain on the Poets of Carbery Including Sean O Coilean The Silver Tongue of Carbery, In Irish using Old Gaelic Script.

…

Unfortunately the old Gaelic script was replaced in the 1950s by the Roman font.

There was a certain amount of unease in some quarters as it cam to be associated with attempts by the English in the 17th century to Proselytism by printing the Bible in Irish. I think the font used by Bishop Bedeal is now largely intact in the Irish Print Museum.

The Watchtower Magazine for September 2015 contains an article on Bedell’s seventeenth-century Irish bible.

The article on the manuscript of Bishop William Bedell’s Irish translation of the Old Testament, which is held in Marsh’s, has generated much excitement among Jehovah’s Witnesses resident in Ireland, with many requests to see the precious manuscript itself. https://www.marshlibrary.ie/bishop-bedells-irish-translation-of-the-bible/

Apple apparently have an app enabling you type in the ancient script.

Séan Ó Coileáin (1754-1817), Carbery Poet, ‘The Silver tongue of Munster’, born into an Ireland of Broken Abbeys, Roofless Churches, Battered castles, Burnt Houses, Deserted Villages united in common Poverty. Attendance 1773 at Coimba, Portugal, College for Christian Refugees.

Peadar Ó h-Anrachain (Peadar O’Hourihane) listed as Vice-Chairman, Cork County Council, 1921.  May be the same as scholar.

December 1899, Schull Board of Guardians: 49 in the Workhouse, Average Cost of Inmate, 1898 over 3 shilling a week.  Dr. Edward  Shipsey mentioned the high cost of eggs that time of year.  He had effected savings of £200 on medicines in the previous 5 years.

It is each to criticise the Guardian for attention to costs.   However the cost of the Workhouse and the dispensary ahd to be paid for locally through the rates.  This is what at the time was one of the poorest and disadvantaged parts of Ireland.

Of those present  JP denotes Magistrates.   Timothy (Thade O’Mahony was one of a family of fish merchants from Kilcrohane married to a former Mccarthy who had a substantial business premise in Goleen.

It might be fanciful but the preference might reflect the strong work ethic of West Cork people of all religions.

Interesting she advertised in the Skibbereen Eagle not the Cork Examiner.

Interestingly looking at Agricultural Shows in West Cork many of the exhibitors are Protestants who migrated to the greater Cork Harbour area or East Cork are for better land and more opportunity but many years later still exhibit in their home place Agricultural Shows.

Looking at the Ross family like that Mrs Sarah Ross, nee Stanley in 1901 and 1911 census she and Husband Michael are bi lingual suggesting that the greater Kinsale area 1850 was bi lingual

This weekend saw the first state commemoration of the 2016 Centenary Commemorations – the commemoration of the centenary of the funeral of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa at Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin, on 1 August 1915. The funeral – and perhaps more importantly the panegyric delivered at his graveside by Patrick Pearse, which is seen as kickstarting the new iteration of the IRB, and paving the way for Easter Rising – was the largest seen in Dublin since that of Parnell in 1891. Yet what of the coverage of the death and funeral of this persona, this connection with founders of the IRB, and in particular in his home region of West Cork? What does this tell us of how O’Donovan Rossa was viewed – albeit posthumously – amongst his people? And what does it tell us about the newspapers in his home region during a period…

1857, Funeral of Dr. Jeremiah (Jerrie) Crowley, Apothecary Hero of the Famine in Skibbereen

From extracts of the Recollections of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, 19165 Skibbereen Eagle,

..

.

.

.

The death is in fact in 1857:

827, 1846, died 1857 Jeremiah/Jer/Jerry Crowley Apothecary, Accoucheur (Obstetrician) ALH, Apothecary to Dispensary, Union, Medical attendant to Constabulry North St Slater’s Directory 1846. Brother James d 1843 of TB. (CC 21/12/1843) – ADDRESS TO ALEXANDER O DRISCOLL, J.P., SKIBBEREEN 1843 [following his dismissal as a Magistrate] Phoenix Society later Fenains founded in his house, now Cahalane’s hairdressing saloon North St, present were Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, Mortimer Downing, Jeremiah Crowley, Morty Moynihann, Daniel McCartie Buried Skibbereen

HIs brother James:

1800, 1807,1824 James Crowley/O’Crowley Apothecary. North-st.Often described as doctor. Pigot’s directory 1824. 1807 marriage settlement witness Patrick Donovan, mariner, Glandore his son Daniel marrying Mary oldest daughter of Jeemiah Crowley shopkeeper. Married Sarah Evans, Lissangle, 1810. Probably of Ballyourane, Caheragh family major farmers. Brother of ‘Dr’ Jerry Crowley, apothecary. Gosnells apothecaries in Cork reputed to be fro Schull/Skibbereen area show in Crowley DNA matches In numerous deeds describes as doctor deeds with Jeremiah O’Crowley Witness 1821 O’Driscoll annuity/deed of lands at Caheragh/Creagh

His nephew Patrick Sheehy, Solicitor:

Died 1940 Patrick Sheehy Solicitor to UDC 1895 Funeral of Bantry Solicitor Daniel O’Donovan aged 26. Attending 1917 funeral of Michael Beechinor Collins, JP, Manager 1897-1917 in Skibbereen of Cork and Kerry Central Creamery. 1938 Funeral of Edwin Angus Swanton, Major Draper, Skibbereen. 1938, attending Funeral of Father John Sheehy, (1892-1938), Curate. Courtmacsherry, of the Prominent Skibbereen Family, his Father County Councillor, One Time TD, Mass Celebrated by 100 Priests, Telegrams, Mass Cards.

From Canada:

I particularly appreciate the part of the story where the funeral rites went a bit ecumenical. My Irish family were mostly Protestants – at least nominally (I have found several intermarriages). In Canada those religious “fences” had gates put into them depending on circumstances. And in remote. isolated communities “Neighbour” sometimes outranked theological sorting labels- if one reads the fine lines in those old documents.

It’s decent to see that happening in the fields and churchyards of their homelands too. Ours is far too divisive a world – usually for political and material gains.

Laying a hero to rest deserves unity in more than the felt griefs- and consoling to see the faces gathered on the same side of the fences.

Nourishing-Stimulating Allman, Dowden &Co. Bandon Specialist stout. Brewed from Home-Made Malt & Hops only. 1912 Carbery Agricultural Show. Lord Bandon Fondness for Clonakilty Wrestler Stout

Lord Bandon was kidnapped and held hostage for three weeks being released on 12 July. The IRA threatened to have him executed if the British went ahead with executing IRA prisoners. During his captivity, Bandon reportedly coolly played cards with his captors, who seem to have treated him fairly well. Reportedly, Lord Bandon would give one of his captors, Daniel (Dan) O’Leary (also known an Leabhair, Irish for ‘Book’, based on the fact he was so well read), money each day for Leabhair to travel from the house in Kilcolman townland, to Slatterys pub in Ahiohill to purchase Clonakilty Wrastler (a local beer).
