The Cotters Of Inchigeela, Co. Cork.
Legend has it that the West Cork Cotters descend from a number expelled from East Cork c 1640s who settled in Inchigeela. Many of the family are still buried in the old church there. The family and their descendants are noted for their business acumen. The Cotters are of Danish descent.
Recent DNA analysis suggests that the West Cork Cotters, Catholic and Protestant do not relate to the East Cork Cotters but are likely to be a Sept of either the O’Learys or the O’Mahonys.

West Cork History 
I have researched a family of Cotters who emigrated to Ontario, Canada circa 1847 from Cork, Ireland (as did my Collins, and a host of other families from West Cork).The family descends from Laurence Cotter, who married Hannah McCarty. Their son, Timothy Cotter, married Ann Flanagan in Oshawa, Pickering, Ontario, Canada in 1848. There were 11 children born to this couple over a 23 year span, beginning in 1849. Timothy died in London, Ontario, Canada in 1909 and is buried with several other family members in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Mooresville, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. Hi I’m researching a Cotter family from Cork that immigrated to Chicago around 1870s. I have 3 siblings…(Mary,Nellie, and William), their fathers name was Jeremiah. I’m not sure if he came over as well.
