Looking up the Church of Ireland records for Bantry I came across Thomas Young Cotter, born in Bantry in 1805. His father Richard may have been born on Cloyne, Co. Cork and he married Ellen Young in London. It is possible that she was of the Bantry Young family who were prominent merchants and engaged in the fishing business. The Youngs are probably in Bantry since at least 1600. Richard was a purser with the Royal Navy in the West Indies and was late joined there by Thomas.
The Bantry Youngs connect DNA wise with the Gosnells, Evans of Ardrala, Youngs of Aughadown and probably Crowleys and O’Sullivan Pritties of Ballyourane, Caheragh.
Foe early Cork Medicals see entries for Bantry under Youngs (Dr. Cotter’s mother people):

Thomas’s medical history is documented in a biography

He had a literary turn editing the South Australian Magazine and The South Australian Almanac. His father had earlier published ‘Sketches of Bermuda’
From Bryan Richards
According to the Muster List of HMS Cerberus, Richard Cotter was born Abt. 1776 Cloyne County Cork. I now discovered Richard and Ellen Young married twice, once in Bantry and again at what is now known as the Queen’s Chapel Savoy London. Another son Pownal Pellew Cotter was Master of HMS Terror on the 1841 expedition and Cape Cotter in Antarctica was named after him. My wife is descended from his another son James MacNamara Cotter. Ellen is most likely the daughter of Thomas Young a Fish Curer of Main Street Bantry. Ellen died in Bantry 1870, one of her daughters was named Jane Lucy Cotter and when widowed she rented from a John Lucy. Latest theory is her mother was Jane Young nee Lucy.

I have the full naval record of Richard Cotter. Although he sailed on voyages to the West Indies he was on the Irish station 1797 to 1803. Then later 1805 he sailed on HMS Fly and was shipwrecked on the Carisfort Reef Bahamas. Naval Warrant Officers did not have continuous service. His son Thomas Young Cotter was not a cadet in the Royal navy as his father was not in warrant from 16th January 1816 Appointed secretary to Sir Pownall Pellew. so Thomas would have only been 11
years old. Richard’s next warrant was a voyage to the West indies was onboard the prison ship HMS Antelope in 1823 when Thomas Young Cotter now aged 18 joined him onboard to Bermuda, but the muster list does not include T.Y. Cotter. Richard took a years leave in Bermuda and recorded details for his Book Sketches of Bermuda, Or Somers’ Islands published in 1828 where his son T.Y. Cotter sketched about 10 illustrations in the book. For example a map of Bermuda [at the end of the preface], the naval dockyard [page before title], Murray’s anchorage[between pages 22 & 23], the Calabash Tree Walsinham [between pages 26 & 27] etc. Both were back in England by 5th May 1825. T.Y. Cotter may have been given some clerical work in Naval Stores in Bermuda, but was not in charge, That was one Thomas irving.
Richard had a close relationship with the Captain of HMS Fly one Pownall Bastard Pellew son of Admiral Edward Pellew. Journal of the House of Lords Volume 53 By Great Britain House of Lords 11th July 1820 pages 283 – 286 and a newspaper article of the time, Richard gave evidence in Viscount Exmouth’s divorce proceedings. Capt. Pellew, R.N. [now 2nd Viscount of Exmouth ] v Tenant, Esq. 1820
Mr. Richard Cotter:- I am a purser in the navy. I know Mr. and Mrs. Pellew. I was in England when they returned from India, in 1809.
I went to them at Plymouth, where I was introduced to Mrs. Pellew. I visited them repeatedly for a fortnight at Lord Exmouth’s house, where they resided. I continued my acquaintance till 1816, when they went abroad. I thought they lived together most happily. Capt. Pellew was a most indulgent husband. They have three children. The youngest is about 4 years of age a daughter. In consequence of some unfortunate reports, I went to Ireland in December last; I saw Mrs. Pellew there. She was in the officer’s apartments. Mr. T. is a Lieutenant of the 35the Regiment; he is about 30 years of age; Mrs. Pellew is about 28; Capt. Pellew is about 32 or 33. I remained in Ireland till last March. Mrs. Pellew, when I saw her, was far advanced in pregnancy. I procured a nurse for her, whom she afterwards declined having. She was brought to bed about the beginning of February. i do not think Capt. Pellew had been in Ireland. If he had, I believe I should have known. Capt. Pellew was captain of the Impregnable at Plymouth, and he remained there for the last two years. Note in the Parliamentary paper it mentions Widdy Island. Richard Cotter and Ellen young’s eldest daughter 25th August 1831 states “In Bantry 18th Inst by the Rev. T. Barry. G. Riordan Esq. of Kenmare Co. Kerry to Ann eldest daughter of Richard Cotter Esq. RN of Deptford”
Deptford/Lambert is where they mostly resided, Ellen Cotter and her Youngest son Richard born Deptford 1830 were not in the UK 1841 Census but in the 1851 Census for that area.

Hi – I am now considering writing a book about the South Australian colonial surgeons. Whilst TY Cotter was only in the position for four years (two in South Australia), his history is also the early history of the province/ colony. I would be very grateful to talk to anyone who has further information about him. In particular, whether anyone knows about his engagement to the position of colonial surgeon. This must have been done in England – probably London, but I have not as yet located these records. Also – I am trying to track down documented proof of his medical studies – which have been alluded to here. I would be most grateful if anyone is prepared to share any information with me.

Interisting that there is s decendent in South Australia, I am a volunteer at Port Augusta Library and coordinate night tour of our cemetery highlighting our past persons, one that will be highlighting in May 2019 is TY Cotter,
I have been scanning google etc, and he was an interesting person. As part of the tour we project on to a screen photo of the person we talking about (6 different people) it would be of interest to talk with a relative and see if they would be intersted in attending “Grave Matters”

This is an interesting site. My name is Lorraine Cotter, my father was Edward Jervis Cotter, my grandfather was also Edward Cotter (married Bridget Spaulding), and my great grandfather was a son of TY Cotter, don’t know which one but his wife was Anna Maria Sleep. We are direct descendants of Thomas Young Cotter. We actually don’t have any contact with the Cotter/Young Clan, so it would be interesting to find out who you are.

Hi, my name is Paul Smith, volunteer at the Port Augusta Public Library, South Australia, Australia.
During May, History Month we conduct night tours of one of our cemeteries, in 2019 I presented a talk on Dr Thomas Young Cotter at his headstone whilst a photo of him was shown onto a screen. His headstone had been removed from its original site which is now a park. There is a street named after him COTTER STREET.
He did have some interesting times in South Australia. If you are interested I would be willing to forward my notes and arrange photo of Cotter Street

I have written up the History of the family of Richard Cotter, beware of Australian articles on Dr. TY Cotter much of it came from his grandson, unfortunately being 12000 miles away from records, several parts are myths and errors. I have a 20 page document of TYC descendants given to me my the late Mrs Fiona Gonzcol. Willing to exchange information. TYC apprenticed in London as Apothecary, then Secretary of Western Dispensary London and walking the wards to learn medicine, he was recommended to apply in 1835 post of Colonial Surgeon.

I have now read the last Will and Testament of John Thomas Young who died 24th January 1851 in Adelaide. His headstone states he was 46 years of age born Bantry. Quote from the Will “I give and devise all the Leasehold Estate at Bantry in Ireland bequeathed unto my me by my late father Thomas Young of Bantry aforesaid unto and to the use of Francis Haire of Angas Street Adelaide aforesaid Schoolmaster and Thomas Young Cotter of Gawler Place Adelaide aforesaid”. This suggests he is a younger brother of his sister Ellen Cotter nee Young who gave birth to Dr. Thomas Young Cotter in 1805. The 1851 Census in London gave her the age of about 17 or 18 at T.Y. Cotter’s birth.
John Thomas Young rented property [four roomed Cottage] from Dr. Thomas Young Cotter in Adelaide

Paul, Thanks, Yes I have that information, Cotter and Young family are my wife’s ancestors. I have the Cotter family from the earliest I can find is Thomas Y Cotter’s father Richard when he volunteered to Join the RN in 1796 at Cobh Ireland aged 20. through to 1900’s. As for the Young Family of Bantry, I have a time line from 1590 when a Dr John Young from Cornwall bought land near Bantry through late 1800’s. Both families having emigrated siblings to Australia. Willing to exchange information as we might have data useful to one another.
