Occupations Bantry

The National Archives in Dublin have two rent books from the Bantry Estate dating from the 1780s (ref MS. 5944 and 5955).  These contain details of tenancies and tenants in the Bantry and Beara areas.  Quite a numbe of the tenants are of the O’Sullivan family and would be in the category of middle-men.

Methodist Baptismal Register Berehave, Co. Cork, Mines 1842-1878

Details of the register came from the Methodist Central Office in Belfast. Looking at the names they seems to those of Allihies miners who probably came in from Cornnwall and when the mines closed left. The are very few if any of the names in the area today

The English Jesuit writer Edmund Campion after a visit to Ireland wrote the History of Ireland (1571) and described the inside of a law school at the time where junior brehons were trained ‘ I have seese them where they kept school, ten in some one chamber, grovelling upon couches of straw, their bookes at their noses, themselves lying flatte prostrate, and so to chaunte out their lessons by peece-meal, being for the most part lusty fellowes of trenty-five years and upwards’.

Durrus Irish Reproductive Loan Fund Records:
For some areas, Irish Reproductive Loan Fund records are an important source of genealogical, social and economic information that has been little used in the past. After the famine of 1822, surplus charitable donations were made available to local loan societies in the counties that had been worst affected – Limerick, Cork, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Tipperary. In 1853, after the British Treasury had assumed responsibility for these funds, it was decided to call in outstanding loans. The local police constable submitted detailed returns, townland by townland, reporting on the debtors – who was still in the area, who had died, and who had emigrated. For the Durrus area many of the files are misdescribed as Ballymore. In Durrus the funds were managed by the rector Rev. Crosthwaite in conjunction with the Rev. Traill Schull and the Rev. Fisher, Toormore/Altar

Widespread emigration commenced in the later 1810a initially to Canada and then to Rochester, NewYork.   Some of the names appear in the Register of St. Mark’s Episcopalian Church in Rochester.

Extracts from the Parish Register of St. Marks and St. Simon Cyrene, Episcopal Church, Rochester, New York. United States, for interconnected West Cork families from Schull, Durrus, Drimoleague and Dunmanway areas from c 1830s.

Irish Reproductive Loan Fund Records:
For some areas, Irish Reproductive Loan Fund records are an important source of genealogical, social and economic information that has been little used in the past. After the famine of 1822, surplus charitable donations were made available to local loan societies in the counties that had been worst affected including Cork. In the Schull area the loans were administered by the rector Rev. Traill. In 1853, after the British Treasury had assumed responsibility for these funds, it was decided to call in outstanding loans. The local RIC constable, in Schull, Ballydehob or Dunmanus submitted detailed returns, townland by townland, reporting on the debtors – who was still in the area, who had died, and who had emigrated. In the list the borrower is shown on the left colun the sureties if known are in the middle. Some of the writing is difficult to read in the original records and townland names are aften corrupt
