Schools in Bantry/Skibbereen/Schull area West Cork 19th century School Boycott, Dromore (Bantry) 1880s. Remarkable as a consequence of the Catholic Church dispute with the British Government that for 30 years (c 1845-75) children were taught by untrained teachers. c 1830 Appointment of Master Madden, Ardfield at a Salary of £28 per annum.

July 1862, Sewer Installed by Mr.Hodnett, he fell foul of County Surveyor, Ratepayers Memorial with names Schull expressing their satisfaction with Mr. Hodnett and amount subscribed.

The Quarter Sessions would equate to the modern Circuit Court.  It was presided over by as ‘Assistant Barrister’.  Under our Constitutional arrangements this would not now be allowed.  He was a quasi civil servant.

The Grand Jury is a roll call of significant property owners in the area.

Evidence of Daniel O’Connell, Esq., 1st March 1825 to Select Committee of House of Commons, London, on state of Legal Administration, Function of Assistant Barrister in Court, Grand Juries selected from Improper Persons, Low persons Vendors of Spirits and Beer, The Bar in Cork, Mr. Wagget, Recorder of Cork, of Private Means with a small salary which he refuses to to be increased, outside Cork the sessions conducted by Attorneys of low repute the relaxation of Popery Laws has given a better class of Attorney then what existed before., The Mode of Administering the Criminal Law by the Magistrates in Ireland has been very bad, particularly in relation to Tithes, for the last two-an-twenty years Roman Catholic have been eligible to the situation of Directors of the Bank of Ireland but not one elected although an immense deal of Bank Stock belongs to the Catholics, up to 10 Catholics in Bank of Ireland Clerkships.

31st May 1862 Arnotts come to Skibbereen.

Sir John Arnott from Scotland arrived in Cork in 1837  became a very successful businessman.  His ad gives a clue, brash, innovation compared to anything previously known in the Skibbereen Eagle.

He assembled huge estates, stores, breweries.

March 1862, Proposal to form Joint Stock Company, ‘Bantry Bay Slate and Slab Company’ already operational at White Horse, Kilcrohane, under captain O’Flaherty, used by John Moss, Durrus, in building Glenlough House 1850 and contractor William Murphy (father of William Martin Murphy) in building Lord Clintons Residence at Crookhaven, Testimonials from F Lisabe, W Thomas and E H Blake of Dublin.

The Mosses were prominent in Durrus in the 19th century with pubs and many went to the USA. They possibly originated in Armagh with weaving.

Clinton bought lands from the Bantry Estate including Bere Island and came to grief.
