Will of Joseph Austin 21st May 1768, Cork, son John in Amherst, Nova Scotia and son-in-law James Brown, Halifax and Cork Canadian links

The Austins were prominent merchants, lawyers and landowners in Cork.

This is from the Welply collection of wills he transcribed before they were destroyed in 1922.

They show the extent of movement between Cork and the Maritime provinces of Canada around 1750. Later Canada was attractive for emigration being shorter then the USA which also then levied a poll tax on entry.

The witness William Callanan may be from the family of Doctors and Apothecaries of Mallow Lane (present Shandon Street)

In Daniel F.Johnsons book ‘Irish Emigration to New England through the Port of St. Johns partly viewable on Google Books he lists emigrant vessels, a partial list in included below. Many of the St.Johns records were lost in a fire at the Customs House in 1870.

Mr. Johnson was told by Robert Fellows Archivist to the Provincial Archives, New Bruswick that in 1977 he had located previously lost records and these formed the basis of part of Mr. Johnson’s book.

The Port of St. John was a gateway port to North America for Ireland, Scotland, England and also Germany. The 1830s and 1840s was a period of large scale emigration from all over Northern Europe. Among the families involved in the Fishing Business in Bantry in the 18th century were the Jagoes. Families of that name were active in the Pilchard Business in Cornwall in the 17th century
