William Smith O’Brien’s history is given in Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Smith_O’Brien

He is a descendant of Brian Ború d 1014, and it is probably through his line that Queen Elizabeth of England traces her Irish Ancestry. He is credited with the inspiration of the Irish Tricolour, ‘The new Irish flag would be Orange and Green, and would be known as the Irish tricolour’. He was a Protestant and received an education at Harrow.

The National Library of Ireland has his workbook containing transcriptions of Irish poetry, sean focals and much more. It is probable that it was done by him. It is item number M803 and was acquired in 1956 from Alister Matthews.

Davy Crocket’s ancestor James Crockett born c 1674 (may be later) was the child of one of the 13 Huguenots who worked with James Fontaine in a short lived fishing enterprise around the late 17th century  to the early 1700s.  He was  Louise de Sax Crocketagne (Anglicised to Crockett) mother Antoine.  The fishery was in the Castletown/Dursey area.

Interestingly Fontaine (James Fountain 1702) and his son James Fountaine Junior (1710) were appointed Justices of the Peace for Co. Cork suggesting that they were well connected

From Wikipedia

In pre-independence Ireland, a Resident Magistrate was a stipendary magistrate appointed to a county (outside of the Dublin Metropolitan Police District) to sit among the justices of the peace at Petty Sessions in that county. They were appointed by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (in reality, therefore, by the Dublin Castle administration in Ireland). The Petty Sessions in the early 19th century replaced the Manor Courts which were inefficient and often corrupt.

Petty sessions were originally held by justices of the peace, who were lay people (and in Ireland, typically members of the Protestant Ascendancy and as the 19th century advanced local eminent citizens), as preliminary hearings for Quarter Sessions and the assizes). From 1836, the justices acted under the supervision of resident magistrates. The Petty Sessions (Ireland) Act 1851 regulated petty sessions, organising the country into petty sessions districts and providing for the appointment…

Mount Corrin Walk

Finola's avatarRoaringwater Journal

View from the cairn, Mount CorrinView from the cairn, Mount Corrin

Walks that get you up to high places with panoramic views are terrific – especially when you don’t have to start at sea level! One such West Cork walk is Mount Corrin. Despite being on The Mizen, it’s part of the Sheep’s Head Walks system, which means it’s accessible and perfectly waymarked.

P1150782

The whole Mount Corrin loop walk is a 17km marathon and definitely not for the faint-hearted.
