Trí Cois-Céim an Coillaigh, 3 steps of the Cock, sign of the Day’s starting to Lengthen

durrushistory's avatarWest Cork History

Christmas was formerly observed in the Highlands on what is now known as “Twelvth Night”. In the Celtic lands, the people did not at first take to the introduction of the New Style calendar in 1752, and tenaciously clung to the ‘old way’ of things, including their conviction of Jan. 6th as the “real” Christmas day. Still celebrated in Ireland as Nollaig namBan:

The Feast of the Epiphany is also called coir-ceim-coilleach, which means ‘the cocks step’; the first noticeable lenghtening of the daylight hours.

From Twelfth Day, the day begins to lengthen by a male hen’s span or stride, Breton Proverb.

Death of General O’Donovan, Bawnlahan, Skibbereen, West Cork, 1829. ‘The late much regretted General O’Donovan was one of the very few proprietors of this County of the aboriginal Milesian Estate, held by his ancestors from time Immemorial. The General, was , we believe, the first of his family to drop the usual designation of an Irish Chieftain of being address as ‘The O’Donovan’ only. In Smith’s History of Cork 1750 he says ‘In this Parish of Miros (Myross) is Bawnlaghan the seat of O’Donovan, Chief of that Ancient Family, a worthy and courteous gentleman. The General was son of Daniel O’Donovan, of Bawnlahan by Jane daughter of Colonel John Becher of Hollybrook (near Skibbereen), grandson of Richard O’Donovan of Bawnlahanby the daughter of Fitz-Gerald, Knight of Kerry and great grandson of Daniel O’Donovan, MP for Baltimore, in 1689, by Elizabeth Tonson, only daughter of Major Richard Tonson, of Spanish Island (great grandfather of the present Lord Riversdale) by Elizabeth sister of Thomas Beecher Esq.

The Brooks originate in East Donegal and came to Durrus possibly with weaving/linen either 1805 or in the early 1850s.  There are descendants in New Zealand.  Millers are from Coolculaghta and were probably originally small holders at weaving.

At the Durrus Tea Meeting the Cole referred to is from Coolculaghta .  The family history compiled pre 1922 is here:

Cole family of Durrus, West Carbery, history, published Belfast 1943.

George Vickery was a large tenant farmer some of the family genealogy is here. Intermarried with the O’Sullivans (Hurrigs) of Tedagh:

At the Bantry gathering the Barret are likely to be from Carriganass Castle relatives of the extended O’Sullivan families of Beara.  the O’Connells are probably of Charles o’Connell Resident Magistrate of the extended Daniel O’Connell family.  Payne is the Land Agent to Lord Bantry.

The names on the list is a roll call of Cork’s affluent adn influential Catholics.  this issue caused outrage throughout Ireland at least among the Catholic Irish.  Bryan Gallwey is Crown Solicitor i.e. State Solicitor.  There are 8 Justices of the peace.  Among the other are prominent merchants and land owners.

The Tablet (Catholic Journal):

THE NUNNERIES INSPECTION BILL.

[The following are the letters connected with, and the petition presented by, Mr. Lucas on Tuesday night last, which may serve as an example for other parishes of Ireland] :—

TO FREDERICK LUCAS, ESQ.,

10, Essex-bridge, Dublin, May 30th, 1853. Dear Sir—I forward to you by this post, for immediate presentation, the potation of our parish against-the iniqui. tons bill connected with our revered nunneries.

As an illustration of the indignant feelings of our people on this subject, from one parish alone you have here upSheds of 9,000 names, collected. in a few hours, of persons protesting and petitioning against AL Chambers’s bill. If others have not petitioned it is most assuredly not from any feeling for this atrocious measure, but from at idea that it is useless to petition an English parliament, and that this bill, like Russell’s act, can never be carried into execution.

We, however, consider that so long as we have legislators, whether foreign or domestic, we should protest against bad laws, and support good ones—I am, dear Sir, truly yours,

W. J. BATTERSBY. TO W. J. BATTERSBY, ESQ.
