Bennets History

George Bennett (1824–1900) was an Irish historian from Bandon, County Cork, who later emigrated to the United States and founded the town of Bandon, Oregon.
Early Life and Career in Ireland

  • Birth and Education: George Bennett was born in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, where he earned a law degree.
  • Writing a Book: He wrote and published The History of Bandon in 1862. He later expanded the book and published an updated edition in 1869.
    Move to America and Founding Bandon, Oregon
  • Traveling West: In 1873, Bennett and his sons sailed to New York and traveled across the United States to the coast of Oregon.
  • New Town: He settled near the Coquille River in 1874. He named the new settlement Bandon after his beloved Irish hometown.
  • Life in Oregon: He worked as a local judge and weather observer. He passed away in Oregon in 1900.
