1856, Letting of Ahakista, West Cork,  cottage with 60 Acres on Death of Doctor Daniel O’Donovan, MD.  His brother Timothy JP lived at the Cove nearby (house sold in 1870s Cronin family used it to build farmhouse and yard) as did is brother Richard JP at Fort Lodge, this was occupied until late 1901 is no in ruins and for sale..

Maud Vickery (1896-1995) her parents ran the hotel.  Other members of the Vickery ‘clan’ also went to Wesley College, Percy Vickery (circa 1904-1909) and his brother George Vickery (a bit earlier). But not his sisters – Maud was a pioneer. In later life Maud was the family genealogist.  The Vickerys were in the Rooska area probably well before 1700 from looking at old family settlements, they were in the category of large tenant farmers on the White/Lord Bantry Estate.

She lost two of her brothers in WW1.

Esther Mary Warner (1896-1968), she lost two of her brothers in WW1.  The family ran a general merchant store.  Over the store Mr. Bird was a  Land Agent, Timothy Cadogan was convicted of his murder in 1900.   The Cork Musgrave family (Supervalu) is descended from the Warners on the female line.  There is a probate reference to a Warner in Kilcrohane in the early 17th century, perhaps they were involved in the early fishery.

The Vickery and Warner family were Methodist, at one time a small Methodist Church operated at the Warner house at Reendonegan. The were interrelated and also to some extent to the Sullivans/O’Sullivan Hurrig family of Tedagh.

This was a fairly common type of covenant.  Rent was often partly paid in labour, turf or butter.

Beginning of Political Machine: Disputed Election 1841, Box from West Division of West Carbery, Co. Cork.  In some case no vote is registered the person is placed in the relevant camp by an educated guess.

The demarcation between Catholic/Nationalist, Protestant/Pre Union is clear.  However in looking at detailed genealogies there is much blurring as a result of intermarriage.

There were comments in the later successful election of Rickard Deasy Q.C. of Clonakilty (later Attorney General for Ireland) that his success was down to Timothy O’Donovan J..P, from O’Donovan’s Cove getting his tenants to Cork to exercise their vote.

May be cousin of Rachel Evans, Lissangle, Caheragh married c 1805 James Crowley, Apothecary (Chemist), North St., Skibbereen and possibly fro Ballyourane, Caheragh.  His brother ‘Doctor’ Jerry Crowley, Apothecary, North St., founder Phoenix Society and swore Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa in.

Rev. Alleyn Evanson, Four Mile Water, Durrus. Middleman and Land Agent.  Died young.  His brothers Hungerford and Doctor Charles guardians of his children.  Either his sister of cousin married Rev. John Madras, their grand daughter married grandson of Daniel O’Connell, his father Charles O’Connell, resident Magistrate in Bantry.  His uncle married to a niece of Robert Swanton, Ballydehob, United Irishman and later Admiralty Judge, new York.

Probate 1853, £5 (may be nominal for conveyancing). After death wife moved to Mespil Estate, Dublin is brother Hungerford and Dr. Henry Baldwin of Cork guardians of young children.
