Interestingly looking at Agricultural Shows in West Cork many of the exhibitors are Protestants who migrated to the greater Cork Harbour area or East Cork are for better land and more opportunity but many years later still exhibit in their home place Agricultural Shows.

Looking at the Ross family like that Mrs Sarah Ross, nee Stanley in 1901 and 1911 census she and Husband Michael are bi lingual suggesting that the greater Kinsale area 1850 was bi lingual

I particularly appreciate the part of the story where the funeral rites went a bit ecumenical. My Irish family were mostly Protestants – at least nominally (I have found several intermarriages). In Canada those religious “fences” had gates put into them depending on circumstances. And in remote. isolated communities “Neighbour” sometimes outranked theological sorting labels- if one reads the fine lines in those old documents. 

It’s decent to see that happening in the fields and churchyards of their homelands too. Ours is far too divisive a world – usually for political and material gains. 

Laying a hero to rest deserves unity in more than the felt griefs- and consoling to see the faces gathered on the same side of the fences.

Lord Bandon was kidnapped and held hostage for three weeks being released on 12 July. The IRA threatened to have him executed if the British went ahead with executing IRA prisoners. During his captivity, Bandon reportedly coolly played cards with his captors, who seem to have treated him fairly well. Reportedly, Lord Bandon would give one of his captors, Daniel (Dan) O’Leary (also known an Leabhair, Irish for ‘Book’, based on the fact he was so well read), money each day for Leabhair to travel from the house in Kilcolman townland, to Slatterys pub in Ahiohill to purchase Clonakilty Wrastler (a local beer).

1905. Cork Junction Railway Bill.  Requisition to the Right Honourable The Earl of Bandon K.P., to Call a meeting for the purpose of Approving the Cork Junctions Railway Bill.

The West Cork railway system waqs centred on the Cork Bandon and South Coast railway in Albert Quay Cork. An unconnected narrows gauge line connected Skibbereen to Schull. The system was extensive and not connected to the Iris rail System. The purpose of the Bill was to link both systems over two bridges over the River lee. Even the the West Cork system close c 1959 the connection was extensively used Adan the West Cork yards were used for the likes of fertiliser storage.

Most of the leading figures in West Cork are listed, political business and professional.

1877 the Cork Examiner report July 1877 of the opening of the Skibbereen railway reported that it was financed by a Cork Grand Jury Baronial advance of £53,000 at 5%, a Treasury loan of £40,000 and that a significant proportion of that  was expended on the Parliamentary process to enable an authorising Act in London.  The solicitors involved in London,  Norton Rose still extant.
