The history of potato cultivation in Ireland has yet to be fully and thoroughly explored. However, because some much was done by peasants, it seems that records are going to be very skimply indeed. Lovely limage of an Irish ctottage garden from the end of the 17th century. One thing – ‘lazy beds’ were not a symptom of Irish laziness, they were a sensible means of draining damp soil, to allow the crops to grow. You still had to remove the weeds from the furrows!
