In 1985 I had the great pleasure of staying with Sir Cosmo and Lady Haskard in their home in Tragarriff on the shores of Bantry Bay, County Cork, Ireland. My brother-in-law (Ian Stanley, Western Australia) is a relative of Sir Cosmos.
On arriving at the property (off N71) I could hardly believe my eyes with the long driveway being lined by beautiful green trees and then seeing the grand house built of a dark grey stone and a circular driveway!
I remember being shown (and signing) their Visitor’s Book. Fascinating in that the Queen Mother had also signed it during their time as the Governor of the Faulkland Islands in 1964.
One night I slept in the upper lounge room on the Colonel’s (Cosmo’s father) stretcher-bed he used when in South Africa. The “Colonel’s bedroom” was at the top of the stairs. There was a narrow hidden stairwell used by maids in the past.
They had two beautiful German shepherd dogs whom they adored and we walked to the rocky shores of Bantry Bay with them on a daily basis.
They were both very active in the upkeep of the property (along with a paid gardener) and took great pride in the produce from their orchard – always eating the fresh fruit after a meal in the formal dining room.
What lovely memories I have of these days.
