Cahir Davitt (1894-1986), Circuit Judge of the Dáil Courts, attempts to stop Kangaroo Courts during Civil War, President of the High Court in Ireland and action over ‘Revenhill Incident’ 1954, Belfast, to prevent breakup ol All Ireland Rugby.
Wikipidea:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cahir_Davitt#cite_note-2
Cahir Davitt, the son of Michael Davitt, of Land League fame, as a young barrister was appointed a Circuit Judge of the Dáil Courts. In one case referred to him a Church of Ireland family was ousted from their holding by squatters, he gave judgement in favour of the original family. The squatters were given 7 days notice by the local IRA Commandant and the rightful owners were restored to their holding.
He was appointed by Kevin O’Higgins to head up the Army Legal Service. At that time lawlessness reigned. The RIC had been disbanded and the Gardaí had not yet taken up duty. His recollections for the Military History provide a chilling insight of the prevalence of ‘Drum Head’ Tribunals and ‘Kangaroo Courts’ which by any interpretation were completely illegal but backed by the Free State Army. He succeeded in enforcing the rule of law.
Later a Circuit Court Judge he was appointed to the High Court and ended up as President. Some of his judgements were reflective of the prevailing Catholic Ethos that predominated official life in the period in the Southern Irish State.
In 1954 Ireland as due to play England at Rugby in Belfast at Ravenhill. Some 10 of the Southern players were upset at the prospect as having to stand for ‘God Save the Queen’ and were refusing to to take to the field. This rapidly escalated and had the potential to split Irish Rugby. Cahir Davitt was a senior IRFU official and addressed the players as did Sarsfield Hogan also a barrister by training and an Assistant Secretary at the Department of Finance. They pointed out to the players that Northern Players habitually stood for ‘Ámhrán na bhFiainn’ in Lansdowne Road in Dublin and the IRFU was one of the few all Ireland organisations. Just 15 minutes before the start the players relented and the match was played. The incident had been largely airbrushed from the official histories. A piece by Vic Rugby and Liam O’Callaghan in ‘Ordinary Irish Life’ 2003, irish Academic Press goes into the detail of the incident.

Incident with Solicitor Jasper Woulfe (later TD for West Cork) described by Willie Kingston, Solicitor, in Skibbereen Historical Journal. Willie Kingston was a cousin of Jasper Wolfe, Solicitor and Crown Prosecutor in Skibbereen. Wolfe at the time had friends in both camps. In April 1921, Wolfe, Kingston and Miss Brown (solicitor’s apprentice from Durrus, later Mrs PF O’Reilly wife of Fine Gael Senator) motored to Durrus where he had a case at Petty Sessions. Kingston had been in Bantry earlier, where he saw two men coming towards him, one saying to the other ‘that’s him’; he thought it was a case of mistaken identity. Later he met Jasper at the hotel and a man came out of the shadows and peered at his face. Jasper had met (Bawnie) T.T. McCarthy, cattle dealer earlier and offered him a lift to Skibbereen. They all went to Durrus in Jasper’s car driven by a chauffer and had tea in Miss Brown’s mother’s house. Leaving Durrus for Caheragh McCarthy was in front with Jasper but his profile indicated him as a cattle dealer rather than the Crown Prosecutor. In Caheragh as they rounded a corner a whistle was blown violently suggesting the man was running and giving a pre-ordained signal. Kingston and Miss Brown crouched down but nothing happened. Jasper had previously a few drinks and slept through the entire episode. When they got back to Skibbereen they heard that an ambush was being laid for Jasper. He thought that the unexpected lift to the cattle dealer had the effect of calling off the ambush.
Willie Kingston also describes attending the Dail Courts at The Land and Labour Hall Skibbereen, Fahoura School, at a field at Derryclough, a stable at Ballyorane and a mill at Donemark. His attendance at Derryclough was photographed by an American lady and appeared in the American papers and later reached Skibbereen. It is said that a Dail Court sat from time to time at Durrus Court.
1908 William J Kingston, cousin and partner of Jasper Wolfe, historian of West Cork. Appeared in Dáil Courts. During Troubles went to South Africa for a few years.
1925 Dorothea M Browne, from Durrus father RIC man from Kerry, mother O’Mahony from Ahagouna, Durrus ran a pub, related to Rosses, Durrus, Luptons Skibbereen. 2nd woman to qualify as solicitor in Ireland. 1939 Michael R Boland. Prominent in attempts to develop West Cork 1940s 50s and 60s brother of Freddy Boland Secretary General of United Nations 1960.
1964 James O’Keeffe related to Paddy o’Keeffe Bantry antiquarian and businessman, Fine Gael TD.

Seanfocal ‘Is Fearr Focal sa Chúirt ná Punt sa Sporrán’ (a word/friend in court is better then a pound in the purse).
Probably explains how spin doctors such as Alastair Campbell who know the geography of Government and politics are so much in demand.

The only picture of the Irish House of Lords in Session 1704, Chichester House, Dublin.
Chichester House , an Elizabethan Residence was the location the various Irish parliaments from the Restoration. until 1729. On the same site by the buildings on College Green which housed the Irish House of Commons and Lords now the Bank of Ireland. The site was reputedly in the past a nunnery.
The Lords are seated on woolsacks traditionally a tribute to the House of Lords.
The House of Lords is open to the public on College Green and is curated by a very helpful Bank Official there is a limited visual display relating to the Parliament and House of Lords.
