Also in extended family,

Margaret Bernard married Edmund Barrett of Towermore in 1729, nearby Ballincollig Castle, it refers to the Coppingers who lived near Skibbereen and land transactions with the Barretts.

1841 Election Petition including Barony of Bere and Bantry Co. Cork: Extended O’Sullivan Clan not Voting for Daniel O’Connell

1841 Election Petition including Barony of Bere and Bantry Co. Cork: Extended O’Sullivan Clan not Voting for Daniel O’Connell

There is a considerable amount of detail in this election petition.

Firstly Richard Donovan (Deputy) is the Clerk of the Crown for Co. Cork from 1836, son of Doctor Donovan, Clokakilty and a cousin of Timothy O’Donovan JP. O’Donovan’s Cove, Durrus and his brother JPs. He was the first Catholic to hold this post since the 17th century.

It is interesting that various members of the O’Sullivan family are listed with significant valuations, all middlemen on the Bantry and Kenmare Estates. In one sense the confiscations of the 17th century left them in place and they enjoyed an opulent lifestyle unlike their miserable under tenants.

it is interesting that they largely did not vote for O’Connell as might have been expected. Looking at other elections such as that of Rickard Deasy the same patterns (not for them) is evident people you would expect to vote for a Catholic do not so so. Often tis may be because of family relationships, personal animosity or close relationships with the Head Landlord.
